We have worked on the development, testing and permitting of major wellfields within the State for over thirty years. Projects have included design, installation and testing of municipal and industrial supply wells and investigation of potential wellfield impacts through analysis of monitoring data, computer modeling and direct inspection/testing of wells. WES has consulted to cities, counties and industries in developing and protecting their ground water supply |

WES directed a study of a municipal wellfield in Central Florida that was impacted by ethylene dibromide (EDB) contamination. The initial phase of the investigation centered on finding the exact point of contaminant entry within the Floridan Aquifer supply well. This involved the removal of the primary well assembly and installation of a smaller, temporary pump. Geophysical logs and vertical profile water quality samples were collected and it was demonstrated that the EDB contamination we entering the wellbore at the primary production zone of the well, over 500 feet below land surface. |
The investigation of EDB wellfield contamination found that application of the pesticide through subsurface injection was widespread. Further, the established drinking water standard of 0.02 parts per billion was sufficiently low that no location for replacement supply well drilling was felt to be safe from contamination. We ultimately recommended that the City install the activated carbon treatment system shown in the adjacent photo. This treatment system was used to treat all water pumped from this wellfield and the design was copied and used at other water supply plants that were impacted by EDB. |
